DOMBOSHAWA CAVES

Domboshawa Caves are located in a hill some 35 kilometres, north east of Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. Domboshawa Hill, is a kopje which means an isolated hill that stands above the surrounding plain. History has it that it is an ancient volcano that has been extinct for millions of years. The name ‘Domboshawa’ is derived from two Shona words, ‘dombo’ meaning stone and ‘shava’, meaning red. Loosely translated, Domboshawa means ‘red stone’.

Visitors to the caves are drawn mainly by caves on one side of the hill, and the rock paintings found inside. The paintings are of historical significance and date back to 6 000 years, having been put there by the Khoisan people who lived there before Bantu people. The term Khoisan refers to two different groups of people, the Khoi who were pastoral farmers and the hunter-gatherer San. The paintings portray about 150 distinguishable pictures of animals, such as the rhino, kudu, antelope, warthog and buffalo, some of which are still found in the area.
